Knee Pain

Understanding structure of Knee Joint
Knee the largest weight bearing joint in our body. Is structurally formed from bone, ligament, muscle, and tendons. The upper thigh bone (femur) and two lower bones (tibia and fibula) joins with help of ligament and capsule.
The ends of these bones are covered with a tough fibrous covering called as cartilage. Also there are two cushions like structure inside the knee joint named as meniscus which acts as a shock absorbent.
Mostly knee problem start with injury to any of these structures but there may be other causes like arthritis, metabolic bone disease. Some people are more prone to develop knee problem than other.

Osteo Arthritis
Most common cause of knee pain is osteoarthritis. It is a degenerative joint disease where mainly there is damage to cartilage part of joint. In a normal healthy bone cartilage provides smooth surface for frictionless movement of the knee joint. Patients with osteoarthritis feel pain while climbing stairs, getting up from sitting posture and in prolong standing. In advance stage of disease one can develop persistent swelling and deformity of the knee joint. Due to deformity and pain your walking gait becomes abnormal. In few patients knee pain is more in the morning and become less as day advances. While in some patients the pain is worse during evening hours. With early intervention and treatment progression and further damage to the cartilage can be prevented.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis cause diffuse knee pain and swelling. Here the synovium (layer producing joint fluid) becomes thickened and inflamed causing pain and swelling. Inflamed synovium damages cartilage and bone of the knee joint leading to permanent joint damage. The good news about patient with rheumatoid arthritis is that with multiple therapy and advance approach early diagnosis and treatment is possible. In advance cases where there is permanent damage of joint, successful cartilage repairing procedure can be done.

Ligament Tear
Ligament is tough rope like structure which connects two bones together. There are four main ligaments in the knee joint out of which injury to anterior cruciate ligament may be most debilitating if left untreated. With the advancement in surgical techniques and technology ACL ligament surgery is done as a day care procedure. Dr Mohit Madan is trained and experienced arthroscopy surgeon performing successful arthroscopic ACL reconstruction surgeries in Delhi / NCR and adjoining regions. Ligament injuries mostly accompanied by other injuries like injury to meniscus or cartilage. All these injuries can be treated simultaneously with great results.

Meniscus Tear
Meniscus is a washer like structure inside the knee joint acting as a shock absorber and helps in uniform load distribution inside the knee joint. There are two meniscus inside the knee joint, one over the inner side of knee joint known as medial meniscus and the another present on the outer aspect of joint named as lateral meniscus.. Most of meniscus tear occur after injury except for degenerative meniscus tear which can occur during normal daily activity. Meniscus tear causes pain and swelling of the joint. Initially the pain may be diffuse which later becomes localized to particular area of knee joint. Some patients experience episodes of sudden pain or catch inside the knee joint, while others may develop feeling of knee locking or give way during certain instances. There could be many other causes for knee pain which can be treated with simple treatment at most times. Neglection or improper treatment may permanently damage your knee joint requiring surgical intervention.
