Hip Replacement

Total Hip replacement is a procedure where diseased and worn out cartilage surface of hip joint is replaced with artificial cup and ball. Normal hip joint is a ball and socket joint where socket is formed by inverted cup like part of pelvic bone known as acetabulum and ball is formed be the upper end of thigh bone. These two structures are joined by capsule and ligaments and surrounded by cuff of tendons and muscles.

Patients with progressively increasing chronic hip pain with impairment of daily living functions like walking, climbing stairs and getting up from sitting position eventually require total hip replacement. Total hip replacement is required mostly in patients of severe arthritis of the hip joint, where the joint surfaces are damaged due to disease process.

There are various causes for the development of osteoarthritis namely –

  • Previous trauma.
  • Avascular necrosis of head of femur.
  • Infection.
  • Aging/ degenerative osteoarthritis.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Congenital anomaly.
  • Certain drugs (chronic use of steroids)

If medicine and exercise and different kind of supports are not helping you much, you must enquire your doctor about hip replacement surgery. Total hip replacement is safe and effective procedure in relieving pain, restoring motion. It helps you to get back to your normal lifestyle.
